I often enjoy window gazing in France in the early evening.....

sandwiched between discovering pieces for clients and dinner.

In Lyon, I was struck by the beauty of one of Max Chaoul's wedding dresses!

2012 collection

Easy to see why he was awarded...

"Best European Creator of Wedding Dresses" in 2000, Venice..

and 4 times the Wedding Trends Award in NY.

Can you imagine walking down the aisle in this beauty!!

Afterwards....the traditional French wedding cake....

A tower of creme-filled, puff pastry balls piled high like a Christmas tree...

with carmelized sugar....

or drizzled with chocolate....

or with icing, sugared almonds, candied ribbons??

The cake is named "croquembouche"

named for the sugar...meaning "crunch in the mouth".

I welcome my French readers to tell me more about this wonderful cake.....

I discovered an exhibition of Chasse-pot

( Galerie Vallois, 41 rue de Seine, Paris 75006)

Jean-Jules Chasse-pot's real name is Paul Rancillac

born in Paris in 1933 and died 2010.

He is known for his papier mache sculptures of heads...

petty bourgeois, soldiers, caricatures.

Chasse-pot mentions...

" as my dog is attracted to other dogs"

he is attracted to heads and the look of his peers.

Wake Up Your Senses on rue de Seine, Paris

The art galleries on rue de Seine in Paris are a feast for the eyes

and the senses !

Color, texture, dimension vary with the artist exhibiting...

In December, Galarie Deprez-Bellorget's window caught my eye..

(15 rue de Seine, Paris 75006)

one could not miss the magnificent color of the sculpture by Rafael Barrios.

And even more...it jumped from the window as if I was wearing 3D glasses at the movie...

almost floating.

Rafael Barrios was born in 1947 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Venezuelan parents.

By age 11, his yard became his studio...where he built mobiles.

As an athlete in school, he remembers the sensation of the wind..

and carried this movement into his works....

always striving for his works "to move" the viewer...

giving us a unique visual experience.

Barrios's YouTube video speaks volumes...

his sculptures..

what drives him...

how sexuality adds to his creative process.

Finding The Unexpected at Theatre Antique, Arles

During buying trips, I often take Sunday to feel France..its people, places, food...its beauty!

On my recent Sunday in Arles in Southern France, I wandered without a goal....

My walk led me into "Theatre Antique"...the Roman Theater begun by Augustus in 1st century.

Never expecting to see among the ruins...

a trio of teenage boys, one using the ancient columns and walls to practice "Parkour" moves.

Parkour was developed in France around 1988.. credit is given to David Belle is Lisses, France.

The body moves around obstacles with speed and efficiency...

vaulting, rolling, running, climbing and jumping!

I talked to the young man, exchanged emails...

in a few days he sent me a YouTube with a friend performing Parkour...

In Parkour, you never stop moving...

Look Where I Stayed in Paris!

How would you like this Paris window view each morning?? (8am, December).

Last week, I stayed with my American friend, Victoria, who enjoys this window

in her great apartment in the 6th arrondisement (metro:Odeon).

She shot these photos while I was there....I envy her eye and her apartment!

This will make you hop out of bed, throw open the window,

and breathe new life..

Leaving the view only long enough to bring back the first morning espresso...

Glad I was not the one off to the kitchen to make the espresso.

Or...seeing the golden Eiffel Tower with its rotating beacon just before going to bed...

(same window, 8pm)

Oh, the dreams this view can spark....

My trip timing was perfect for one of her Paris meetup groups...

Meetup of expats for shared picnic and photos of the rising full moon...

The group was filled with an interesting, welcoming mix of women and men..

loved their stories of what led them to Paris.

The hot pumpkin soup, homemade brownies, champagne and more

was not the only things that warmed my heart...

They eagerly wanted info on my blog, quickly inviting me to other expat meetings..

making me think...would it be time to make Paris home?

and Victoria has the most interesting job ...

she's a pleasure coach!

I guess she takes her own advice about living with pleasure!

Paris's Venus des Arts Statue

My walk down Rue de Seine, enjoying the various galleries....
suddenly turned into an intriguing surprise...

as I glanced to the small side street, Rue Jacques Callot...
A lifesize bronze statue commanded my full attention!

The art palette first caught my eye..

As I walked to the rear of the statue...a double bass

A pile of 12 books wedged inside..

Artist's brushes...

a broken picture frame...

Standing back....I take in the front view of the splintered torso..

Focusing on the head..sliced into 5 sections..

The bronze statue is by the French-American sculptor Arman and was erected around 1988.

This is not a statue you will want to view quickly...
"La Palette" cafe just beside!

Learned today from Elaine, who follows my blog...

Arman's father was an "antique dealer" in Nice...a great connection.

French Antique Fairs....See What I See

This fair was only for professional antique dealers and you must present identification and pay a fee to enter..

Remember "everything is fair in love and war"...
So it is everyone for themselves when an antique/brocante fair opens!
We want to find the best pieces for our clients, so quickly trying to see something special before another spots it first.

At 8am normally the gates open and the French dealers start unloading their trucks.

No time for breaks...the French dealers start loading everything back on their trucks at 1pm...

Trying not to step on the cute dogs...dogs go everywhere in France

Paintings can be displayed formally on easels...

Or paintings worth thousands of dollars scattered on the floor...
Good idea to watch where you step!

I loved this young girl, looking at her book, with her doll close at hand...
The artist captured her beautiful, angelic face !

Or this woman artist, painting among the garden...dressed as if ready to attend a gala...American artist did this one.

Remember reminding your children not to get paint on their clothes?..
Not a worry here.

Find a frame for that painting that needs the perfect partner.

Sunset in Arles

On Sunday, visited Arles....red sky at sunset near where Van Gogh painted "The Starry Night" and "The Yellow House".

Then...the next morning, found this painting of red sky !!!!

I see why French artist are drawn to paint the French sky.

Paris Christmas Market

The perfect photo shoot location for the Eiffel Tower at night....

From the top of the Ferrris Wheel off Champs-Elysees near Franklin Roosevelt Metro stop....overlooking the Christmas Market lining the street.

My first stop....cotton candy!! I ate ALL of this...one good thing about traveling alone. Cotton candy in France tastes just like I remember when I was 6 years old...none of that over processed sugar that I now find in US.

Known in France as " Barbe A Papa"... Papa's beard.

My tummy shouted no more sugar as I passed this wonderful chalet selling chocolate....they break off a piece from the large sheets depending on the size you wish.

I could not pass up this salmon being grilled by the open fire...
Quickly ignoring the cotton candy now lining my tummy.

The salmon was served in a baguette with lettuce and a white sauce, similar to mayonnaise.....excellent flavor....a bit smokey crispy on the edges and soft in the middle. Probably the best flavor of any of my long list of grilled salmon dishes.

I am not a sausage fan, but this was one BIG grill with every sausage known.

Today was one of the those crisp, fall days in Atlanta...
One of those days that beckons you to walk.

I have "driven" past this Inman Park home soooo many times....
Without "seeing".

On my walk, I lingered and imagined....
The pleasure each day of walking up to the door.

This home is lucky to have a creative owner with a heart for beauty..

Beauty in Chattanooga

What a wonderful surprise to find more than you expect..

so was my first trip Saturday to Chattanooga.

Beauty and sculptures abound in the Bluff View Art District.

My favorite?

"Icarus" by Russell Whiting

ready to leap off the bank and soar over the river

My biggest surprise?

Deborah Butterfield's horse sculpture appeared to be from driftwood...

Actually cast bronze with patina.

She is known for her graceful sculptures of horses that look like they are made of wood.

I never would have guessed!

I love groups of "3"...so much warmer than only 2

"Adolescence" by William King

"Grandfather".....he captured the love.

Remember the 'jacks' we played as children...are you that old 'too'?

A new twist called "Walking Jackman" by Ernest Trova.

"Couple in Two Benches" by George Segal appear to be looking over the river...or at each other!

So much more to discover in Chattanooga...

But I favor leaving more for another trip.

I so enjoyed, I can already feel Chattanooga calling me back!

Wiggle Chair

Loved these 1972 Wiggle Chairs by Canadian American designer and architect Frank Gehry....

Vanity Fair called him "the most important architect of our age".

The Wiggle Chair is made by gluing multiple layers of corrugated cardboard

in alternate directions, held together by hidden screws....

resulting in a strong chair with a sculptural design.

Although Frank's parents introduced him to the world of art and museums...

his grandparents inspired his interest in architecture and everyday materials.

As a child, he and his Grandma built cities out of scraps of wood....

inspiring him to take his first classes in architecture.

And the Saturday mornings at his Grandfather's hardware store inspired his designs using corrugated steel, chain link fencing, unpainted plywood...

Even the natural color of cardboard was retained in the chair design.

Can you imagine having these original 1972 chairs gracing your home?

Orchestra Ink Drawings....Felicia Pacanowska

In June, I purchased many original works coming from the estate of Felicia Pacanowska.

My Paris dealer had acquired many special pieces from her sons, now living in Italy.

Her pen and ink studies of the orchestra caught my eye...

I favor when an artist leaves something for our imagination....

Her drawings let me feel the movement...

the long hours of practice and more practice...

hear the music...

My heart fell for Pacanowska's pen...

the color, the design.

She always carried her sketchbook, pen, and ink from China.

Always prepared for what she might discover.

Her works take on special meaning, after learning the hardships of her life.

She was born in 1907 in Poland to an artistic family and in 1932 moved to Paris to study with the School of Paris.

During the war, she lived under extremely dangerous conditions and learns her parents died under hands of Nazis.

She loses all of her art works and supplies...but continues her passion for art and life.

In 1947, she returned to Paris and begins again...

painting, drawing, etching, watercolors, and pastels.

My drawings above are dated soon after...1949,

The joy and passion she captures in her art...

the beauty of music...

after all that she saw and felt..

amazing!!

on my last road, my last 2-3 miles... hovering above horses grazing early in the morning.....

I knew then, I loved Texas!

"Messenger" Dog....Paris Style

This is truly "man's best friend"....French style.

Work could not stop this Paris "messenger" from being with his 4-legged friend.

I watched as the messenger returned to his motorcycle from a delivery...

He lovingly spread the red comfy cloth....

Gently with his hand...pushed down the center...

As if preparing a cradle for his baby!

Once...everything was just right..

It was time for his dog to take his upfront seat..

Riding off to another delivery.

Goggles to protect his eyes!

Love Locks in Paris

Returning from my favorite hot chocolate cafe on Isle St. Louis in Paris...

I discovered the thousands of love locks on Pont de l'Archeveche.

The bridge crossing from Notre Dame Cathedral to the left bank of the Seine is covered with

"cadenas de l'amour".

Lovers from around the world ..

engrave their intials, fasten the locks to the bridge, and throw the keys into the Seine..

proclaiming undying love!

Love locks stretch beyond Paris and can be found in several European cities...

Rome, Moscow, Prague, Cologne, Florence, and Pecs, Hungary.

Paris officials have not always looked kindly on this practice of showing love.

In May, 2010, overnight...

thousands of love locks were cut off from the bridge Pont Des Arts near the Louvre.

The officials' desire to 'preserve heritage' was overpowered by lovers that have now adopted

Pont de l'Archeveche.

What were the officials thinking??

Paris is more than buildings.

Paris inspires emotions.... beauty, romance, and love !

French Fathers...Papa

I was in the south of France,

searching for special pieces for clients.

I heard jazz just down the street...

and then the love and dance between this papa and his young daughter,

caught my eye and my heart.

He was so proud...

so loving.

He is teaching her more than to dance to the street music...

He is showing her she is beautiful and loved.

Fathers have that ability.

Happy Father's Day....

Modern Caught My Eye !

Loved these clock face chairs by French architect Daniel Maniac.

He had 70 of the chairs made in Italy in 1999 in honor of a Paris "clock sculpture".

The Night Before Marburger Farm Antique Show

You know you are in Texas when on Saturday it is over 90 degrees.....

and on Monday you are digging out your sweater ...

But this is March at the Marburger Farm Antique Show in Round Top, Texas!

Saturday was spent unloading the truck..

With breaks for hellos to the other dealers that sell here each April and October.

Sunday and Monday was arranging and re-arranging the booth..

and re-arranging again!!

We want to WOW the thousands of customers that pour into the show Tuesday at 10 am

Tonight is nursing the sore muscles

Tomorrow is what we work for......seeing our customers smile,

Cooling off in July in Avignon

This is July in the south of France !

I was in Avignon in July searching for my favorite French antiques...

If you have been in the south of France in July...

you know it can be SCORCHING hot!!

A truck was going through the narrow city streets of Avignon...

Blowing out huge, COOL, soapy-like bubbles !

Men and women forgot their age...

they forgot to worry about their shoes buried in inches and inches of bubbles..

they remembered being children.

I allowed the bubbles to cover my hair, my clothes...

( I 'tried' not to worry about my shoes)

So if the winter weather has you down...

think "what would you do" for even an hour of cold in July??

French Architectural Antique Birdcages....Buildings in Miniature

During the reign of Napoleon III, France was making its most elaborate architectural birdcages.

Many cages were copies of real buildings...castles, churches, and palaces ...

some bird owners even commissioning cages to be replicas of their own homes!!

The details of turrets, balconies, doorways, and windows appealed to collectors.

I have even seen clocks included!

Collectors such as Alexander Wilson Drake were fascinated with the principles included in the design.

(Drake's impressive collection is now part of Cooper-Hewitt Museum's permanent collection)

I smiled at the inclusion of the spikes atop the roof..

Keeping birds away from the building?

In the 18th century, birdcages were often designed to sit atop tables, however,

the 19th century saw more cages designed with flat backs to mount against the wall...

allowing a simple background to highlight the intricate architectural detail of the cages's front.

This painted 19th c French architectural birdcage's detail and size (36" long, 25" tall, 16" deep)

makes it a great centerpiece for your collection.

But not in France !!

In the south of France, I discovered the largest grocery shop I have ever seen...

So many aisles of yogurt...how would I ever decide??

But the part that really caught my eye....was their honor system

When you arrive at the shop...

you can choose to slide your credit card through a machine...

Select the hand held scanner that lights up...scan each item as you place in your cart....

When finished shopping, ...

Bag your own groceries...

Slide your card once again to say you have finished...

And go to your car !!!

No long check out lines !!!

To keep everyone on their toes ... there are random checks to be certain you scan all the items ;-)

Braving snow, rain, and cold in Paris....

my heart glowed when I discovered this gilt wood piece hanging in a dealer's shop.

I instantly loved it !!

The shape

The patina

The size....34" tall and 16" wide

The surrounding vine and fruit carvings
The front and back are the same

I could think of so many uses....
but how was it used originally in 1900??

I spoke to the dealer who explained....
then I loved it even more !!!

Treasures Found At Marburger Farm Antique Show

Driving home today from the Marburger Farm Antique Show, Round Top Texas and thinking about the treasures of the show.

Treasures to me are those special finds that give you joy, a smile...and make it a day to remember.

In my Marburger booth, the 1917, 4 foot long dog painting was the hit of my booth.

5 minutes after the show opened, a customer's smile said it would be her treasure to take home.

I had a hard time deciding to part with this French papier mache dog ....

I often found myself stroking his nose or playing with his original velvet collar with tiny bell.

I remember my smile in Paris when I discovered this pair of 18th century painted wall brackets
.....easing the pain of waking up before the sun.

This week at Marburger, treasures were everywhere.....the wonderful finds in all the dealers' booths AND the wonderful finds of friends...old and new.

Corey Amaro, Tongue in Cheek blogger http://www.willows95988.typepad.com/ was visiting Marburger this week....and brought Yann, known to us all as FH or French Husband.

I am still smiling as I remember her witty, animated stories during the past days.

And Yann deserves a medal for his many kind deeds for dealers during the show, a chest of medals! He even taught me to use Skype on my computer.

Plus the warmest hearts...when Corey heard a plumbing crisis had me searching for a new room (when every room is booked for miles and miles)....she, Yann, and her friend, Lynn (The Side Door Antiques) welcomed me, a stranger, into their rented house.

Treasures to me... special finds that give you joy, a smile...and make it a day to remember...new friends.

LIVE, WORK, and FIREWORKS !!

Today is special....
July 4th PLUS the 2nd anniversary of my move to my studio loft that doubles as my home. My loft building is from the 30's with a spectacular view of Atlanta's city lights. Tonight at 9, everyone gathers on the roof to watch the firework displays. The roof's 360 degree view allows you to see multiple events...Lenox, Centennial Park, Turner Field, The Underground, and Stone Mt.

My favorite space is the way the sun sets outside my window...casting an everchanging shadow on the walls. The concrete floors welcome outdoor furniture...fun!
I placed my platform swing under the overhead fan....the breeze and view of the city lights puts me back to my childhood days of swinging on my grandmother's porch.

Love watching foreign films...

so mix a little R&R among my antique pieces, keeping my favorite art close at hand.

The space never looks the same....as I sell and buy!

I love the feel of the exposed duct work and 14 foot ceilings.

My Favorite French Nude Artist: J. J. Henner

I always search for beautiful French nude paintings...as they are sought by my clients.
I quickly learned..it is my female clients that most often seek the sensual beauty of the paintings.

My favorite French artist for the nude is Jean Jacques Henner...known as J.J. Henner.
The above painting is one of his works that I sold in Atlanta. Henner was born in 1829 and was only 12 when he began his training. He made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1863 and exhibited regularly for 40 years...winning almost every award then available to artist. Although a well-known portrait artist, Henner is best known for his nudes...with cream colored skin and russet hair. He frequently included a blue cloth..as seen in the above painting and some of his auction records exceed $50,000.

You can view many of his works at the Jean-Jacques Henner Museum in Paris with over 500 canvases and 1000 drawings..including some of his first sketches and late unfinished works. The Museum is located at 43 Avenue de Villiers, Paris 75017.

I favor nudes in outdoor settings. The above painting( another redhead) is by the 19th century artist, Jules Armand Hanriot.

As decorators, do you suggest the use of nudes?

I have come to favor the focus that can be brought by hanging paintings without frames.

We may have overlooked noticing this small painting...

but it pops on the naked wall of the French home.

My eyes notice the painting on the floor over the 2 on the wall.

French Artist With Many Pseudonyms, Galien-Laloue

My favorite 19th century French artist of rural landscapes is Eugene Galien-Laloue, 1854-1941.
His life, both personal and professional, is intriquing.
Galien-Laloue was quite the solitary man and rode a bicycle to paint his country scenes as he hated walking in mud and even grass. The most intriguing aspect of his personal life....he married each of 3 sisters. The sisters were his neighbors and he married the youngest sister first. After her death, he then 5 years later married the middle sister...and yes, after her death, while in his seventies he married the oldest sister.

In his professional life, he continues his intrigue....for he painted with many names/signatures.
It has been said by those that studied his life...no other artist has worked with so many pseudonyms.

He signed the above rural landscape, "Lievin"....possibly honoring a soldier friend, Jacques, that was from the town of Lievin.
One of my happy Marburger clients took this one home to Dallas.

In addition to landscapes, Galien-Laloue also painted marines...often inspired by postcards and photographs.
The above marine has another of his popular signatures, "L. Dupuy", possibly used to honor an artist friend, Leon Dupuy, almost 60 years older than Galien-Laloue. They both lived in Fontainbleau and enjoyed painting rural landscapes.

Galien-Laloue did sign his birth name on his Paris street scenes....yet another subject that was so different in nature to the rural landscapes and marines. For the Paris scenes, he often chose to paint in gouache rather than oil as gouache dried easier and he could complete a work in two days rather than two weeks in oil.
Painting techniques were influenced by his background...his father had been a set designer for theatre.... the architecture was painted precise with attention to season, sky, lighting, and time of day. Sometimes, he even used relatives to help animate the scenes.
As he painted Paris street life for over 50 years, his paintings tell a colorful story of the history of Paris.
The Paris scenes are extremely valued....the above scene of the Grand Boulevards (pencil and watercolor on card) sold for $90,000 at auction in 2007.
Another in gouache sold for $173,000 in 2004.
Even his less important Paris pieces usually demand prices $30,000-$50,000.

Galien-Laloue continued painting in his eighties....painting constantly and only stopping to eat.

European Flavor For Windows, CANTONNIERES

I like the simple elegance of the flowers ... 19th century French carved wood.

Love On Canvas, DOG PAINTINGS

Clients somehow spot my dog paintings, even when surounded by scores of others. Their faces light up as if they have found their new best friend.....which our dogs often become.
In April, during my Marburger Farm Antique show, one client discovered the 3 dog paintings I had purchased from a private collection ...when she heard the 3 paintings had always been together at their earlier home in France...she simply could not split up the family and took all 3 to her home!!

For more than 5000 years, artists have portrayed the image of the dog. During the 16th century more and more people wanted to be painted with their pet dogs. The first paintings solely of dogs started around the 16th century, taking off even more in the 17th century. By the 18th century, the importance of dogs to hunting, especially in France, added to the increased number of dog portraits.Artist have portrayed dogs as mythological beings, hunting companions, prized possesions, a symbol of fidelity, and one that greets us with eyes lit up, tails wagging, and never ending love.

My favorite quote....

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human.

The point of it, is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog."

I think that also explains the joy of being a grandma.

A Delightful Discovery, French Color

As my blog is about French antiques, objects of beauty, and....."delightful discoveries",

I thought Memorial Day week-end would be a good time to add some frolic to my post.

A long week-end is perfect for extra time with family and friends....grilling and entertaining.

On a recent trip to Paris, I discovered these colorful forks at a delightful shop off Saint Germain.
I placed them in my silverware drawer amongst my traditional pieces....expecting to use on occassion or with my young granddaughters. The surprise was, my hand continued to pass over the tradional pieces and go straight for the pretty, colorful ones...pausing only long enough for my inner voice to say "what color do you feel like today?"

I soon understood that now I was enjoying selecting my fork color the same as selecting my clothes for the day. Today I chose purple.

I hope eveyone has a fun and colorful week-end with those you care about.

The Importance of Angels

Angels (anges) and children have a special place in my heart. Each one is unique even when they are sisters or twins. Angels have been touching hearts for centuries, inspiring poets and writers to find words to explain their magic...

In "The Angels' Little Instruction Book" by Eileen Elias Freeman,

she writes...

"When babies look beyond you and giggle, maybe they're seeing angels."

and suggests

"Insight is better than eyesight when it comes to seeing an angel."

Terry Southern says "An angel has no memory."

Unknown authors have left their mark..

"Angels are never too distant to hear you."

"While we are sleeping, angels have conversations with our souls."

The dealer explained it was a mold for papier-mache.

French Interior Paintings, Become the Author of Your Story

Like novels, interior paintings allow us to peer into life in another time.

I recently brought this one back from Paris.

The home is filled with music..

a grand piano and a magnificent, gilt harp await the musicians.

The woman is gazing in the mirror...

In my favorite book on interior paintings, "at home", Frances Borzello writes of Felix Vallotton..."Vallotton understood the potential of a room in the way that poets do: not much is needed to set a scene that liberates the imagination."

The artist gives us clues and then allows our imagination to write our own story.

Before Louis Vuitton: Moynat

Today, Louis Vuitton is a household word.

However, in France, there were other important malletiers...trunk-makers,

or manufacturers of luggage and suitcases.

In 1849, 5 years before Louis Vuitton decided to start his own trunk-making business,

Jules Coulembier founded The House of Moynat.

Moynat was especially well known for their automobile trunks.

It was a time long before mini-vans and navigators...

a time when suitcases often rode on the outside of the car.

In the above ad, dated July 11, 1914,

Moynat is proud that they are the only one to guarantee their luggage for 5 years....

and have patented clasps on the ends, not available anywhere else.

The French dealer explained...

the thin, yellow trunk would have been tied down on the top of the car,

and the 2 smaller cases would have been on the rear trunk of the car (domed trunk on top).

I can imagine...gazing at a passing car with the tan, brown, and yellow trunks...

Not only beautiful, but aerodynamically sound.

The yellow trunk reminds me of French sunflowers.

It could wake up a room as a coffee table top!

A Passion For French Wood Fragments

What calls you to want to
touch, hold, and take home a special French antique??

For me, it is like a soulful connection....a piece will catch my eye, my hands want to hold,

and then if I start to leave...a magnet pulls me back and the piece must come home with me....

it just must!!

This passion is strong when I see and hold an old, worn fragment.

How was it originally used, who has owned it, what has it seen?

Fragments can be used countless ways...

turned into lamps, sconces, over doorways and paintings, even mounted as statues....

but for me, I want them close at hand.

I need one nearby when I work at my desk.....

it will catch my glance,

and then my hands must give it a gentle rub.

As comforting as a child's stuffed animal.

The power of old pieces!!!

Fashion....Becomes Art

France is world reknown for Art and Fashion.....and last month, I discovered a French artist combining both into one.
At a Paris art show, I found the works on canvas of peinture Isabelle de Joantho.

She had creatively attached wire coat hangers to the top of art canvases.....and then with a combination of paint and textiles, created a 3-dimensional stunning dress.
It was as if the dress was on its hanger, removed from the closet...ready for the upcoming gala.
The colors and design would have been runway winners !

Painting With A Bird's Eye View

Just returned from Paris and attended an art fair featuring several hundred of France's contemporary artist.

I popped in stand after stand ....and then I was captured by the oil paintings in the stand of Perrine Vilmot !

Her view of the world is creative and original.

It was as if she had climbed high in the trees.....and saw the world through the eyes of a bird.

By changing our view, she opened our eyes to details often missed.

A painting of two young children playing pick-up sticks, becomes mesmerizing!

She favored paintings with children and often used bold shades of purple, red, and green.

Sometimes her paintings contained 16-25 small scenes, that allowed the viewer to almost see life in a play.

Paris Antique Dealer: Farmhouse Tables

Or a table from a monastery in Loire Valley??

Alain Michallek lives in Tours in the Loire Valley. Each week-end, you can browse through his assortment of antique tables, mirrors, and accessories at his stand in the Paris flea market.

Today, I was barely able to take a photo of this handsome Vigneronne table as customers were flocking in to ask questions. The tables were used by vineyards during grape harvest and stored during the winter. When the two shaped ends are added, the rectangular table is transformed into a beauty seating up to 14. The top is pine with the base in oak.

In France, they often mix the old wood table with contrasting modern metal chairs...very chic.

Alain has displayed on top of the table, a collection of 19th century wine bottles...once containing white wine for sale.

On the left, is my favorite...an ink bottle.

All now can be used as vases, water jugs or ???

When possible, I favor walking the streets of Paris over taxis and the metro...the opportunity of discovery always amazes me.

This evening, I passed a shop window that had me pulling out the camera and writing down the shop's website.

Beauty and Presentation at Paris Lunch

I always cherish a new discovery.

I had lunch for the first time at Alcazar in Paris (just off Saint Germain) and it was a feast for the
eyes as well as the tummy.

The starter of haricot vert (green beans), beautifully laid over gazpacho

and spinach leaves...and then topped with poached egg, like whipped cream on a sundae....was only the beginning.

After a main course of bar ( a wonderful French fish), which was lightly crisp on the outside and wonderfully soft inside....the customary cafe.

Alcazar continued to add beauty in the presentation with the French colors of red, white, and blue.

And of course, everthing taste its best with champagne !

One of My First Stops in Paris

Why are these 50+ men, women, and children standing in line in Paris?

Not a concert, play, or new tech-gadget!

Berthillon glace (ice cream) brings out the crowds everyday.

Located in L'ile Saint Louis, the small parcel of land surrounded by water and adjacent to Notre Dame...and is one of my first stops on each Paris trip. I favor the side by side scoops of pistache (pistachio) and noisette (hazelnut).

This Sunday I was forced to make a substitution as they were not offering my pistache.

Great reason to return another day :-)

My 'Carrot' for Texas

A French Atelier, artist studio

I search for paintings that capture a special insight into an artist.

It is rare to find an artist studio, his atelier.

As in interior paintings, the empty room gives us an invisible sense of the artist.

The studio is just as he worked, not readied for visitors.

A drawing is left lying on the floor...

We can imagine the artist, on his knees, sorting through his nearby portfolio.

One painting is casually propped on the table, facing the wall...

wine and coffee out.

A landscape still rests on his easel and we learn what subjects caught the artist's eye....

perhaps giving a clue to what part of France he lived??

Lavishly Blooming Hydrangeas

Some gardeners have green thumbs....my grandmother must have had all 10 fingers green!

Her garden was filled with vivid colored flowers and her large, lush hydrangeas blocked the window view.

I rarely purchase floral oil paintings, as most pale to the beauty of the flowers I remember as a child.

However, this painting touched my heart!

Paris-Roubaix, one of cycling's oldest races

A great find for cycling fans!

Le Paris-Roubaix 1933 painted cut-out wood sign.

The 70" length makes the cyclist come to life !

Started in 1896, the race is one of cycling's oldest and is famous for its rough, cobblestone terrain.

The winner is given a cobblestone (sett) as part of his prize!

Also known as The Easter Race, it is always on a Sunday, in early April.

This year, the race will be April 11, 2010.

2 T butter ( I use a bit less)

Freshly ground pepper

French sea salt ( the finishing salt makes the difference)

Melt butter in a sturdy skillet on low med heat

Add the green beans and shallots ( I wash my beans just before cooking, so the beans are slightly wet)

Cover, stirring occasionally for 10 min ...or until the beans are as you like them

sprinkle with fresh ground pepper and the sea salt

serves 6...but I can eat half :-)

Through a private introduction, I met a french art dealer with a fabulous eye.

He does not have a shop, and allows me to accompany him to his private storage space.

First, we 'push' his car from the tiny area...then I can see his special pieces.

Followed, by 'pushing' his car back into place.

But oh, he has such special paintings!

A dream, to find a piece with such history... Over 250 years of history!

I was stopped in my tracks, when I spotted hanging in the window,

"Couronne de Lit" (pronounced koo RUN de lee)

And to add to the charm...from a "Chateau in Provence" !

Measures almost 36" in diameter and will be hung at Marburger

Antique dealers are very competitive.

We wake up early and travel far.

Contacts, not known by other dealers, are our prized possession.

We love to tell you the stories of our finds.....but never about our contacts.

I maintained a calm exterior...but was shouting 'yippee' inside.

My favorite contact had acquired a private collection of dog paintings !

April is nearing and it is time again for Round Top, Texas to stretch its seams as the 77+ residents welcome thousands of antique dealers and customers to the famous "Round Top Antique Week".

For months, I have searched France for my favorite french antiques, art, and objects of beauty....squirreled them from view of clients ......and next week load my truck for a 14 hour marathon drive to Marburger Farm Antique Show.
